ABSTRACT

This study goal to evaluate the effects of different concentrations of lead (Pb) and silver (Ag) on germination, initial growth and anatomical alterations of Lactuca sativa L. Plants use various mechanisms to reduce the impacts caused by anthropic action, such as xenobiotic elements of soils and water contaminated by heavy metals. These metals were supplied as lead nitrate and silver nitrate and the following treatments were established: control for both metals, maximum dose of heavy metals, for arable soils, allowed by the National Council of the Environment (Ag = 25 mg. Kg-¹, Pb = 180 mg. Kg-¹), double (Ag = 50 mg. Kg-¹, Pb = 360 mg. Kg-¹) and triple (Ag = 75 mg. Kg-¹, Pb = 540 mg. Kg-¹) of this dosage. Vigor and germination tests of the seeds and possible anatomical changes in the leaves and roots of lettuce plants were performed. The species showed a high capacity to germinate under Pb and Ag stress, and the germination was never completely inhibited; however, the germination decreased with increasing Pb concentrations, but not under Ag stress. The use of increasing doses of metals reduced seed vigor and increased chlorophyll content. An increase in biomass was also observed in plants from treatments submitted to Pb. The phytotoxic effects of metals were more pronounced at 15 days after sowing. Anatomically, L. sativa was influenced by metal concentrations, and had a reduction of up to 79.9% in root epidermis thickness at the highest Pb concentration, although some structures did not suffer significant changes. The results suggest that L. sativa presents tolerance to high concentrations of heavy metals, showing possible mechanisms to overcome the stress caused by these metals. In this research lettuce possibly used the mechanism of exclusion of metals retaining Pb and Ag in the roots preserving the photosynthetic apparatus in the aerial part of the plants. In general, the chemical element Pb was more toxic than Ag, in these experimental conditions.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Improper design and management of the cover layer of a sanitary landfill has been proven to produce harmful environmental impacts on the environment. One alternative at hand is to develop scenarios based on simulation of physical and computational models to represent the expected field water balance of a landfill coverage layer. This paper investigates the design of a sanitary landfill final cover in the municipality of Seropédica, which is located at the state of Rio de Janeiro - Brazil. More specifically, the compact soil coverage, which is widely used for landfill final cover of municipal solid waste, is evaluated in contrast to vegetation cover by grass, vegetation cover by brachiaria and capillary barrier. To accomplish such task, hydrometeorological forcing conditions, namely daily rainfall and temperature, were retrieved from the Anchieta weather station, which is situated nearby the study area. The Hydrus 1D and 2/3 D computational codes were employed to develop a set of scenarios to follow the contamination plume evolution within the landfill along the time frame of 20 years with some degree of reliability. It should be noted that the performed evaluation indicates the possibility to control the leachate release and consequently to avoid contaminating the environment, notably to prevent soil and water resources pollution. Vegetation cover by grass and brachiaria showed important control mechanisms with respect to the movement of the contaminant plume. In addition, it should be noticed that the best results for the landfill final cover were achieved for the capillary barrier, while poor performance results were obtained for the commonly employed compact soil.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT This study aimed to critically examine the Brazilian legislation that regulates the theme of contaminated areas. The legislation of São Paulo State was also assessed because this state was the pioneer in facing the problem. This study's methodology involves a qualitative overview of the bibliography, using both international and national legal doctrine, as well as websites. It was concluded that a national consensus regarding the concept of soil is required; the Brazilian and São Paulo State legislations, by adopting rules and guidelines established in the developed countries, failed to disregard Brazilian reality and specificities; the participation of the community involved at all stages of the remediation process is essential; the decision-making should not be based solely on the generic quality soil standards, but also on the ecological and human health risk analyses at a specific contaminated site.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The aim of this study was to assess the association between the distance to the nearest feces, the type of substrate to be studied (feces, soil, grass), and whether a given area was licensed or not with the presence of helminth eggs in Concepción, Chile. A total of 256 samples taken from feces and either from soil or grass at 10 cm, 50 cm, and 100 cm from feces (including 16 public areas), were examined for the presence of parasites using the ZnSO4 technique. The association between variables with the presence of eggs was assessed with multifactorial logistic regressions. 24.21% of samples presented at least one egg. The higher odds of Toxocara egg presence was positively associated with the licensed 'area type' and the soil 'sample type' (when compared with feces). The odds of Ancylostomatidae egg presence was positively associated with the licensed 'area type', but negatively associated with the soil 'sample type' (compared with feces). The results suggest that finding eggs must be interpreted differently based on the parasite species and substrate to be analyzed, and that the presence of parasitized dogs is a more important contributing factor than the frequency with which the ground is cleaned of feces.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT This research evaluated the changes on populations of culturable N-fixing free bacteria (NFFB) and P-solubilizing bacteria (PSB), as well as on the root nodulation by native rhizobia, the root colonization and spore number of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), in the rhizosphere of Clitoria ternatea and Brachiaria brizantha grown in mesocosms contaminated with crude oil (0, 3000, 6000, 9000, and 12000 mg kg-1), for 240 days. After 24 h of soil contamination, the highest populations of NFFB and PSB (5.5 and 4.9 LogUFC, respectively) were found in control, and the lowest populations were obtained at 12000 mg kg-1 (5.1 and 4.2 LogUFC, respectively). In contrast, at 60 and 240 days, the control showed lower populations of NFFB and PSB (5.4 and 4.8 LogUFC, respectively) than contaminated treatments. The highest number of root nodules in C. ternatea was quantified in control at 60 and 240 days (25 and 27 nodules, respectively) in comparison to those observed at the treatment with 12000 mg kg-1 (7 and 1 nodule, respectively). At 60 days, AMF colonization in both plant species, and the number of spores significantly decreased as the crude oil concentration increased; however, at 240 days, the highest number of AMF spores was recorded at treatments with 6000 and 12000 mg kg-1. The dry weight of both plant species significantly decreased as crude oil concentrations increased. Although C. ternatea was more susceptible to the toxic effects of crude oil, this plant species showed greater content of total chlorophyll than B. brizantha.

ABSTRACT

Toxaphene is an organochlorine pesticide that was used for years in the cultivation of cotton. After its prohibition in the old cellars of Cenalgodon (Caracolicito - Cesar), bad management practices were carried out that generated soil contamination. Due to this problem, and to the well-recognized importance of the functional microbial groups as quality indicators, a soil analysis was performed in contaminated and uncontaminated soils to evaluate the effect of toxaphene on some microbial communities during two climatic periods. Some populations of cultivable microorganisms related to the carbon and nitrogen cycles were evaluated by the method of direct plate count and most probable number using selective culture media. The total counts of the population of bacteria, fungi (Log CFU / g of soil) and microbial functional groups of C and N (Log NMP / g of soil) isolated from the soil contaminated with toxaphene were lower than those recorded for the control soil during the drought and rain periods (p≤0.05). Some groups of microorganisms were correlated positively for both soils indicating their synergistic participation in the cycling of nutrients, which could favor the recovery of contaminated soil and the maintenance of the ecosystem as long as the environmental and the physicochemical conditions of the system are improved.

ABSTRACT

Studies show environmental contamination as a decisive factor for the perpetuation of the epidemiological triad of infection by parasites, posing a risk to human health. This work identified parasitic contamination in peridomestic soils, enteroparasite infection in humans and domestic animals in the Riacho Dantas and Rio do Onha, rural communities of Santo Antônio de Jesus (Bahia, Brazil). Analyses were performed in 53 homes, with soil samples collected in four points as well as collection of human and domestic animals feces from July to October 2015. Soil samples as well as human and domestic animal feces were analyzed. For the analysis of human fecal samples, four methods were used, including spontaneous sedimentation, Baermann-Moraes, Kato-Katz and Graham. For animal fecal samples three methods were used: spontaneous sedimentation, Willis and Rugai. For soil samples, two methods were used: spontaneous sedimentation and Rugai. Of the 636 samples of soil analyzed, 68.7% were positive for some parasitic form, especially non-ciliated protozoa, ciliate protozoa; adults and larvae of the nematodes and hookworms. Of the 144 samples of human feces, 75% were positive, especially for: Endolimax nana, Entamoeba coli, hookworms, Giardia duodenalis, Entamoeba histolytica/E. dispar and Enterobius vermicularis. Of the 21 animal feces samples, 85.7% were positive, especially for the genera Ancylostoma, Toxocara, Trichuris and Giardia. The studied soil samples presented biological contaminants (for example, Toxocara and Ancylostoma) some of which pathogenic for humans and domestic animals. The lack of information regarding the care of domestic soil and direct contac

ABSTRACT

Abstract We aimed to verify the changes in the microbial community during bioremediation of gasoline-contaminated soil. Microbial inoculants were produced from successive additions of gasoline to municipal solid waste compost (MSWC) previously fertilized with nitrogen-phosphorous. To obtain Inoculant A, fertilized MSWC was amended with gasoline every 3 days during 18 days. Inoculant B received the same application, but at every 6 days. Inoculant C included MSWC fertilized with N–P, but no gasoline. The inoculants were applied to gasoline-contaminated soil at 10, 30, or 50 g/kg. Mineralization of gasoline hydrocarbons in soil was evaluated by respirometric analysis. The viability of the inoculants was evaluated after 103 days of storage under refrigeration or room temperature. The relative proportions of microbial groups in the inoculants and soil were evaluated by FAME. The dose of 50 g/kg of inoculants A and B led to the largest CO2 emission from soil. CO2 emissions in treatments with inoculant C were inversely proportional to the dose of inoculant. Heterotrophic bacterial counts were greater in soil treated with inoculants A and B. The application of inoculants decreased the proportion of actinobacteria and increased of Gram-negative bacteria. Decline in the density of heterotrophic bacteria in inoculants occurred after storage. This reduction was bigger in inoculants stored at room temperature. The application of stored inoculants in gasoline-contaminated soil resulted in a CO2 emission twice bigger than that observed in uninoculated soil. We concluded that MSWC is an effective material for the production of microbial inoculants for the bioremediation of gasoline-contaminated soil.

ABSTRACT

Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis is transmitted among sheep in Argentine Patagonia causing pseudotuberculosis. The bacterium penetrates the skin or mucous membrane wounds, infecting the superficial lymph nodes and viscera. When surface abscesses are cut during shearing, they drain their purulent contents and contaminate tools and the soil. The objective of this work was to evaluate the survival capacity of C. pseudotuberculosis over time, in soils from the extra-Andean Patagonia region. Five types of superficial soils were collected from different areas in Chubut province (extra-Andean Patagonia), having distinctive physicochemical properties including organic matter content (very high to nonexistent), pH (neutral to strongly alkaline), electrical conductivity (saline to non-saline) and texture (sandy, clayey, silty loam). Different aliquots of each type of soil were inoculated with C. pseudotuberculosis PAT10 strain isolated from a Patagonian sheep, and were stored at room temperature. The number of surviving bacteria was determined at various times. Sixty percent (60%) of the inoculated C. pseudotuberculosis population survived for 80 to 210 days in soils with moderate to high organic matter content respectively. Silty soils favored bacterial survival, whereas the variables pH and salinity had no effect on survival.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Spore counts, species composition and richness of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, and soil glomalin contents were evaluated in a soil contaminated with Zn, Cu, Cd and Pb after rehabilitation by partial replacement of the contaminated soil with non-contaminated soil, and by Eucalyptus camaldulensis planting with and without Brachiaria decumbens sowing. These rehabilitation procedures were compared with soils from contaminated non-rehabilitated area and non-contaminated adjacent soils. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi communities attributes were assessed by direct field sampling, trap culture technique, and by glomalin contents estimate. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi was markedly favored by rehabilitation, and a total of 15 arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi morphotypes were detected in the studied area. Species from the Glomus and Acaulospora genera were the most common mycorrhizal fungi. Number of spores was increased by as much as 300-fold, and species richness almost doubled in areas rehabilitated by planting Eucalyptus in rows and sowing B. decumbens in inter-rows. Contents of heavy metals in the soil were negatively correlated with both species richness and glomalin contents. Introduction of B. decumbens together with Eucalyptus causes enrichment of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi species and a more balanced community of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi spores in contaminated soil.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The areas used for disposal of urban solid waste - usually represented by the "dumps" - are potential sources of pollution, negatively influencing the quality of human life and environmental health in the regions under their influence. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in soil and water in the disposal area of the urban solid waste of Humaitá, Amazonas, Brazil. The study was conducted on soil of native forest, natural field and in the solid waste disposal area, as well as in the water courses near the area of solid waste disposal. The low clay levels found in the soil of the study area do not make it suitable for solid waste disposal. The levels of heavy metals in soil are within the limits allowed by law. And only iron in the water is above the limits allowed. The index of quality of water was good.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to measure irreversible DNA damage in the offspring of rats exposed to contaminated soil. Bone marrow cells were removed from the femurs of the offspring of rats that were exposed to contaminated soil via gavage during three different periods: 21 days prior to detection of pregnancy, during pregnancy and 21 days after birth, during the lactation period. For each group, we also had a control group under the same experimental conditions but exposed to uncontaminated soil. The results showed that pups borne of rats exposed to contaminated soil had an increase in the number of micronuclei in the different exposure groups compared with their respective control groups. This suggests a potential risk of mutagenic damage to the offspring of pregnant women who live at the sampling site.

ABSTRACT

The presence of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and their effects on soil properties in urban area of Maicao, Colombia, was evaluated. 18 sites were selected: nine contaminated and nine non-contaminated and two depths (0-30 cm and 30-60 cm) were evaluated. The medium TPH fraction (Soxhlet reflux method, EPA 3540C) and heavy TPH fraction (Soxhlet reflux method, EPA 3550C) were extracted. TPH were identified by gas chromatography with flame ionization detector (GC-FID). Soil parameters related potential adsorption were determined: pH, electrical conductivity (EC), organic carbon (OC), cation exchange capacity (CEC), texture; soil moisture retention, aggregate stability. High contents of TPH was found in all fractions. No significant changes were found for texture and (EC). There was an increase in the content of OC (500%), soil aggregation and aggregate stability (200%); slight decrease pH, CEC and soil moisture retention (23.5% soil surface). These results show the vulnerability of the urban soils to the TPH contamination and exposure of the human population to these contaminants.

ABSTRACT

Biodegradation of 2,4'-dichlorobiphenyl (2,4 CB), by two isolates of Pseudomonas (GSa and GSb) was compared using GC-MS. Transformer oil polluted soil was used for the isolation of 2,4 CB degrading bacteria. GC-MS analysis of the solvent extracts obtained from Pseudomonas sp. GSa spent culture indicated the presence of Phenol 2,6-bis (1,1-dimethyl)-4-methyl (C15H24O). Further, the enzyme analysis of the cell free extracts showed the presence of 2,4'-dichlorobiphenyl dehalogenase (CBD), 2,4'-dichlorobiphenyl-NADPH-oxido-reductase (2,4 CBOR) and 2,3-dihydro-xybiphenyl-NADPH-oxido-reductase (2,3 DHOR) with specific activity of 6.00, 0.4 and 0.22 μmol/min/mg of protein, suggesting that dechlorination as an important step during 2,4 CB catabolism. Further, the cell free extract of GSb showed only 2,4'-dichlorobiphenyl-NADPH-oxido-reductase (2,4 CBOR) and 2,3-dihydroxybiphenyl-NADPH-oxido-reductase (2,3 DHOR), with specific activity of 0.3 and 0.213 μmol/min/mg of protein, suggesting attack on non-chlorinated aromatic ring of 2,4 CB, releasing chlorinated intermediates which are toxic to the environment. Although, both the isolated bacteria (GSa and GSb) belong to Pseudomonas spp., they exhibited different metabolic potential.

ABSTRACT

With the aim of studying the contamination of soils with eggs of Toxocara spp. in an arid area in the central-western region of Argentina, 76 soil samples were collected from 18 towns belonging to six provinces of central-western Argentina. They were processed by the centrifugal flotation method. No eggs of Toxocara spp. were found. It can be concluded that the negative results are directly related to the characteristics of the environment and climate present in the studied area. The finding of eggs in soils depends on several factors: the presence of canine or feline feces, the hygienic behavior of pet owners, the presence of stray animals without veterinary supervision, the weather and environmental conditions, and laboratory techniques used; and all these circumstances must be considered when comparing the results found in different geographical regions. In order to accurately define the importance of public spaces in the transmission of infection to humans, it is important to consider the role of backyards or green spaces around housing in small towns, where the population is not used to walking pets in public spaces, and in such cases a significant fraction of the population may acquire the infection within households.

ABSTRACT

Herbicides used in Clearfield(r) rice system are characterized to be mobile in soil. This mobility contributes to environmental contamination and intensifies the residual in the soil, due to the upward movement during the off-season. The flooded irrigation used on rice crops is the main cause of imidazolinones leaching. However, alternative practices can be used to minimize leaching of herbicides. This research aimed to evaluate the effects of different irrigation management on leaching of imidazolinone herbicides. For this, two experiments were conducted using soil columns in a greenhouse and testing three irrigation managements: continuous, intermittent and field capacity. The herbicides were applied to soil surface and after 48 hours irrigation started. At 45 and 90 days of irrigation for the first and second trials, respectively, bioassay was carried out using different soil layers. Results showed that the formulated mixture of imazapyr + imazapic showed the greatest leaching potential. For individually herbicides tested, imazapic was the most leached one, followed by imazethapyr and imazapyr. Continuous and intermittent irrigation managements did not differ and promoted greater leaching potential of herbicides compared to soil at field capacity.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the frequency of geohelminthic contamination of public parks and squares in Curitiba, state of Paraná, Brazil, between August and December 2010. A total of 345 samples were collected from 69 sandboxes in different areas and were tested using the Faust, Lutz and Baermann parasitological techniques. Potential risk factors associated with soil contamination were also analyzed. A total of 36% of the samples (124/345) were positive for helminths and 65.2% of the areas (45/69) were classified as contaminated in one or more samples. The most commonly identified parasite eggs were Ancylostoma sp. (14.5%; 50/345); followed by Toxocara sp. (9.6%; 33/345) and the Strongyloidea superfamily (excluding hookworms) (2.3%; 8/345). The analysis on the epidemiological risk factors indicated that the presence of dogs and feces in the sandboxes increased the chances of contamination of the site. Use of fences had a protective positive impact that reduced soil contamination. Health education programs should be applied within the community to minimize the risk of human contact with dogs' feces. Use of fencing in these areas is highly recommended to prevent or reduce the users' contact with animal excrement.
